Negotiating Professors and Librarians to Deliver Majority Petition to University of Ottawa Central Administration

Ottawa, October 8, 2024 – Full-time professors and librarians at the University of Ottawa, represented by the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO) will announce the delivery of a majority petition to University of Ottawa’s central administration on Thursday, October 10 at noon.

Full-time professors and librarians at the University of Ottawa have been in collective bargaining since June 12, 2024. Despite a considerable deterioration in working conditions and collegial governance in recent years, leading to an erosion in the quality of education and research, the university’s central administration refuses to negotiate on key proposals to remedy these problems.

Faced with this refusal, over 70% of the APUO’s professors and librarians have already signed a petition demanding that the employer fully engage with our proposals on addressing workload, supporting the quality of teaching and research, and democratizing decision-making. The number of signatories continues to grow daily, and the petition will be delivered to the central administration this week.

“This demonstration of the unity of our members is a message to the administration that professors and librarians are determined to defend the quality of education and research at the University of Ottawa,” said Dimitri Karmis, President of the APUO.

Date: Thursday, October 10
Time: 12 p.m.
Location: Outside the main entrance to Tabaret Hall, 550 Cumberland Street, Ottawa

Note for media

Two members of the APUO Executive Committee and Negotiation Team will be available to media for comment after the event.
